OPHTHALMOLOGIST
SUMMARY. Examines, diagnoses, and treats, by surgical and conservative means, injuries and disorders of the eye. Manages ophthalmologic services. Related DoD Occupational Group: 260117.
QUALIFICATIONS.
Experience. Completion of a residency of fellowship in Ophthalmology acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF, is mandatory.
Current board certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology or the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmoloy and Otorhinolaryngology
SPECIFIC TASKS.
Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of the eye. Provides care in inpatient and outpatient settings. Evaluates medical and surgical histories. Assesses visual and refractive status, measures intraocular pressure, and examines the eye and adnexa. Performs necessary diagnostic procedures and clinical tests. Interprets results, determines treatment plan, and discusses with patient. Coordinates preoperative evaluation. Performs local anesthesia and surgical procedures. Prescribes and administers various ocular and systemic medications. Performs laser surgery.
Manages ophthalmological services. Formulates plans and procedures for ophthalmological services. Schedules operations and assigns nurses and medical technicians in such functions as refracting eyes and prescribing glasses. Directs nurses in procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and in operating room techniques. Advises on kind and quantity of ophthalmological supplies and equipment. Coordinates ophthalmological services with other medical activities. Instructs interns and residents in ophthalmological procedures. Serves as consultant on ophthalmology.

QUALIFICATIONS
The optometrist shall have sufficient experience to be able to adequately perform optometric tasks, to include, but not limited to the following:
• Prepare Eyewear Prescriptions • Verify Complete Eyewear Prescriptions • Fit and Adjust Prescription and Plain Safety Glasses • Perform Minor Repair of Glasses
Have successfully completed an accredited optometry training program and possess and maintain a current, valid, unrestricted license.
Graduates of foreign training schools are required to possess both a license to practice optometry and other certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or 5th Pathway.
Be employed full-time in the practice of optometry or in training for 24 of the last 36 months.

QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Residency. The Physician must have completed one of the following residency programs:
1.1.1 An Emergency Medicine residency at a hospital acceptable to the USAF Surgeon General.
1.1.2 A Family Practice or Family Medicine residency at a hospital acceptable to the USAF Surgeon General.
1.1.3 A combined Pediatrics and Internal Medical Medicine residency at a hospital acceptable to the USAF Surgeon General.
1.1.4 Or board certified in one of the specialties listed below and minimum of 5 years fulltime experience working in an emergency department and able to treat full age spectrum.
1.2 Specialty Certification. The Physician must be specialty certified as follows:
1.2.1 Emergency Medicine Residency-trained physicians: Board certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM) is preferred.
1.2.2 Family Practice or Family Medicine Residency-Trained Physicians: Current board certification by the American Board of Family Practice (MD) or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (DO) is required.
1.2.3 Combined Pediatrics and Internal Medicine Residency-Trained Physicians: Board certification in this specialty is preferred.
1.3 Experience. The Physician must have three (3) years of post training experience within the last four (4) years. Five (5) years of experience within the last seven (7) years is desired.
1.4 The Physician must have the ability to be credentialed for the full age spectrum of patients from newborn through geriatric.
1.5 Possess and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Course (NRC) certifications are desired but not required.
